Where Our Mission Began — and Continues to Grow.

In 2012, founders A.C. Black and Jane Anderson moved to Uganda to serve alongside Mercy Childcare. What began as a season of service opened their eyes — and their hearts — to the devastating realities of trafficking and sexual abuse among teen girls in the region.

In 2013, She Is More Than became a verified 501(c)(3), and A.C. and Jane moved to Uganda permanently, purchasing the very first restoration home. They welcomed their first 8 survivors into a small space filled with enormous hope. At that time, She Is More Than was one of only 3 organizations in Uganda serving trafficked and sexually abused teen girls.

In 2018, the Ugandan Ministry of Gender honored She Is More Than as one of the Top 20 Children’s Homes in Uganda — a powerful affirmation of the organization’s trauma-informed approach and government trust.

In 2021, She Is More Than broke ground on 2.5 acres of hillside property — the fulfillment of a vision founder A.C. once had of a “city on a hill.” The current home serves 16 survivors and houses offices for 8 full-time staff. It is the first of six planned buildings, which will eventually accommodate up to 60 survivors with dormitories, a full kitchen and cafeteria, an administrative building, and a recreational area.

OUR PROGRAMS.

What We Offer Every Survivor

Trauma-Informed Therapy

Certified counselors guide each survivor through personalized trauma therapy, helping them process their experiences and begin the journey toward emotional and psychological healing.

Education & Schooling

Survivors receive access to formal education, tutoring, and academic support — empowering them to dream bigger and build futures they never thought possible. 18 girls have graduated from university.

Vocational Training

Our cosmetology training program has graduated over 112 young women, equipping them with professional skills and financial independence. We also facilitate microloan programs to support female entrepreneurs.

Medical Care

Each girl receives comprehensive medical care, including physical health screenings, ongoing healthcare, and wellness support — because true restoration is holistic.

Safe Housing

Our permanent hillside home currently serves 16 survivors with staff support available 24/7. As we expand our campus to six buildings, we will eventually house up to 60 survivors at a time.

Community Prevention

We educate thousands across Uganda annually about human trafficking and sexual abuse — empowering communities to protect the vulnerable before they become victims.

A STORY OF HOPE.

Esther's Story

When Esther came to She Is More Than, she was 13 years old — rescued after surviving unimaginable exploitation. She arrived afraid and broken. But inside our restoration home, she found more than just shelter. She found belonging.

Through trauma counseling, education, and vocational training, Esther has begun to dream again. Today, she’s learning to sew, attending school, and helping mentor younger girls who arrive afraid — just like she once was.

Every girl’s story matters. Every step forward she takes is a testament to resilience, healing, and the power of community.
