UGANDA MAIN PROJECT:

SURVIVOR RESTORATION FACILITY | PREVENTION & TRAFFICKING AWARENESS

She Is More Than, dba Talitha Koum, operates a live-in restoration facility for girls in Uganda where over 250 trafficking and sexual abuse survivors have come through our doors and received care since 2011. We know that everyone experiences trauma differently, so we created a program that breaks the cycle of abuse and equips each survivor with the tools she needs to heal mind, body, and soul. While our survivors live with us for 3 to 6 months (duration of stay dependent upon their specific case), they receive:

  • Safe housing with round-the-clock security

  • Medical care

  • Trauma-informed individual and group therapy

  • Academic tutoring and vocational training

In 2018, with generous contributions from donors and partners, we finalized the purchase of 2.5 acres of beautiful, secluded hillside property where we began construction on our first building; the restoration facility! The facility is now complete and currently serves as housing, therapy, and office space until we are cleared for construction on the next one. We have plans to build dorms, staff offices, a dining hall, a recreational area, a guest house for our international visitors, and a parking lot. Once our multi-structural compound is complete, we will be able to house up to 50 young survivors at a time! This is more than triple the amount we are able to take in now and will vastly broaden our reach to continue bringing freedom and healing to the growing number of girls victimized by sexual abuse and sex trafficking in this corner of the world.

She Is More Than is also passionate about preventing sexual injustice from ever taking place. One way we accomplish this is through our Arise Prevention Program: Preventing human trafficking and sexual violence by empowering women to rise above their circumstances through skills and business training. Arise meets three times a week where young women outside of our home come and receive professional skills training, trauma-informed therapy, a meal, and career guidance. It has been proven that socioeconomically empowered young women are less likely to end up in prostitution or vulnerable situations where options to create viable and sustainable income for themselves are present. Students of Arise receive training in cosmetology (hair and makeup), soap making, crocheting, tailoring, nail tech, and small business management.

If you would like to support either of these programs in Uganda, you can do so by clicking here! Our goal remains to continue providing safety, healing, empowerment resources, and restoration to as many young survivors of human trafficking and sexual abuse as possible. And we can't do that without you!

It was overwhelming for to me to sit in our home in Uganda and think about the awful circumstances these girls have come from and the atrocious ways in which they had been treated and abused. And yet, after tearfully sharing their experiences, I witnessed them then begin to praise God for the new life they have been given and talk joyfully about their schooling and plans for the future.

ORLANDO MAIN PROJECT:

RAISING AWARENESS BY EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY

Throughout Central Florida, She Is More Than raises awareness about the epidemic of human trafficking and inspires students, parents, and teachers to join us in the fight to end it. We work closely with Seminole County schools to see curriculum added to every high school that will promote awareness among students about the dangers of human trafficking and how they not only can avoid it, but become paramount players in the battle against it. Every organization we partner with, panel we speak on, and awareness event we participate in brings us closer to achieving our goals. We want everyone to know:

  • Who traffickers target

  • How traffickers work to groom, lure, and trap victims

  • The signs of someone being trafficked

  • How you can protect yourself and your loved ones

  • How you can join the fight to end human trafficking right where you are

She Is More Than also works alongside Seminole County law enforcement as a member of the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force. We join forces with police and other like-minded organizations to identify local trafficking trends and organize awareness events for schools, essential workers, and various community groups to further trafficking education throughout Central Florida.

Before I got involved with She Is More Than, I didn’t know trafficking was such a big issue. Then once I knew it was like, how can I not do anything about this?
